I'm so bad at personal beauty. I don't know how to wear makeup or how to do my hair. That's normally not such a bad thing, since I don't wear makeup and I don't do anything but put frizz cream in my hair and brush it and let it air dry. But now I'm thinking about cutting it.

I sent the link to Mom to ask her opinion and she thinks it ought to be 3" shorter and that it would take more work than I think. I don't even know how to look at a picture and know how to make my own hair look like it.

So, all-knowing beauty afficionados - help!

I go through phases where I am somewhat high maintenance, and then back to no maintenance... sometimes having extra girly times in my life is fun. My mom was co-owner of a beauty shop before she became a nurse (and then she had a setup in our basement), so I learned many tricks from being her shampoo girl.

How long is your hair right now? Do you have a recent pic? How curly/thick is your hair? That style in the photo depends on the right cut for your hair. You have at least somewhat curly hair, so getting the body in the photo will be no problem for you.

My hair is in a very similar cut at the moment, and to get my curls to be smooth like in the photo, I first pull them out with a big paddle brush while blow drying. Then, I use a round brush to set the turn at the ends. Sometimes, if I want my hair to look extra smooth and wonderful, I'll use steam rollers -- but I get LOTS of poof when I use those (my hair is about the same length as in that photo) and I usually pull it back into a pony tail for about an hour after I use rollers, just to help flatten the volume at my scalp/crown.

Layers like that can either be a lot of work, or not so much work, depending on your hair type. If your hair is curly, you could get layers and be able to get away with just wash and go. For me, short layers like that would be pretty high maintenance because if I didn't style it, all the shorter cuts would show and just kind of hang there.

It's definitely a cute style though, I think you should go for it :) And you so don't need makeup, you've got great skin!

I totally agree with the above -- I've definitely decided I prefer layers with my curls, to a blunt edge because it's very very wash-n-go, but still sexy and tousled.

With curl and layers, you can let it go natural, or get fussy like in that pic and smooth it out.

That's one of the draws, I think, to having layers like that. I can just let it air dry every day or I can kind of dress it up and make it smooth and shiny if I want to. I have wavy hair (not quite as curly as yours but definitely not straight) so I think it'll work well.

I'll take a picture of my "before" hair soon - I don't have anything recent.

I have mostly straight hair and I get mine cut like that - but about 3" shorter. I just call them long layers. If I don't style it at all it ends up slightly waved like that. If I blow it with a brush it's less wavy but full-bodied.
