When I was outside with the dog I found a piece of newspaper that was all yellow. I read a bit of it - it's talking about a Nazi being hung, and Stalin in talks with someone, and has some classified ads selling cars from the '30s.

I just finished reading a consumer guide for pedometers. I didn't like it. (It's here if you want to read it too. All it says is "some pedometers do this, some do that." No names, no recommendations. Dumb.

It's Friday already! I hope the day goes by quickly - I'm ready to go to the beach tomorrow!

Pedometers
Yeah, that was a bad review. I was thinking about getting one, but I was always sort of skeptical about how well they worked. Turns out the slower you walk, the less accurate they are, which is pretty much antithetical to the point of pedometers. Seems to me that the people who would want to use them-- those who aren't sure if they walk enough-- are the ones who walk the slowest! Bah. Maybe "Consumer Reports" has something to share. I'll do a literature search and get back to you.

Happy Friday, MeganMommy!

Re: Pedometers
My coworker at Columbia and I wanted to get pedometers to see how far we walked in a day. We didn't walk super fast though, so it wouldn't have mattered I guess. But now I'm trying to start walking quickly for 30-40 minutes every evening, so I'm trying to think whether I could even use a pedometer.

What are you doing for the long weekend? Next time you come to Seattle, you might have to take a side trip down here! :P

Re: Pedometers
Unfortunately I'm busy writing a paper this weekend (due at 11:15 AM on Memorial Day, pfft) but it's coming along pretty well. I'm coming back to Seattle in the middle-ish of June, but I would love to take a side trip down to Or-uh-gone. I haven't pulled a Kerouac-- nor taken a train-- in 715908324.6 years, and since it's my favourite form of transportation, maybe I'll take a train of some kind. :-)

Although I don't know if it's of any use to you now, here's the Consumer Reports article I found about pedometers. At the least, it mentions specific brand names and prices, which is more than we can say for that other crappy article. Some of the better-ranked ones are inexpensive and accurate, so those are a couple of positive things to consider.

I've uploaded the PDF there; you can just download and read at your leisure.
